Outreach and support to local businesses increased with newly funded initiative

NEW STRAITSVILLE, OH (June 3, 2019) — The Southern Perry Incubation Center for Entrepreneurs (SPICE) has received a $10,000 community investment grant from Rural Action to identify, interview, and promote small businesses in Southern Perry County in the villages of New Straitsville, Shawnee, and Corning.

This grant will support the work started by the Southern Perry Network (SPN), a group of community stakeholders working to boost and support local businesses throughout southern Perry County. The group formed after meeting with members from Rural Action’s Entrepreneurial Communities in early 2018 and has since interviewed local businesses to connect them to resources they need to continue their livelihood. With their funds, the Southern Perry Network plans to expand promotional strategies with more printed materials supporting the effort, creating a website and tourism application for mobile devices and further developing their social media content. The Southern Perry Network will also identify resources to support and assist in the group of local businesses in these communities.

"This investment has brought small business, service providers and the community together. The SPN is promoting not only local businesses but also the intrinsic benefits and opportunities in the entire southern portion of Perry County,” said Melody Borchers, SPICE Microenterprise Business Consultant.

The work in southern Perry County is a small piece of the scope of work for Entrepreneurial Communities. This project is an Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) POWER grant-funded initiative that aims to help communities organize themselves to aid their small businesses to better grow and thrive a stronger local economy. With these funds, Entrepreneurial Communities plans to invest in seven communities across five counties to build and uplift the local economy.
