The Perry County Board of Commissioners announce today a new initiative to help local small businesses cope with the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.  Called the Small Business Relief Program, the Commissioners are making up to $10,000 available to small businesses to assist with business interruption and other costs caused by the pandemic.

The application window for the program opens at 8:00 A.M. on the morning of Wednesday, September 16. The Commissioners have set aside $200,000 for the Relief Program and funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-qualified (all support documentation submitted) basis.

“Small businesses are the beating heart of our county’s economic life, and we need to do whatever we can to help them survive,” said Commissioner Scott Owen. “We’ve targeted the Relief Program to county businesses with up to 30 employees; the very businesses we know have borne much of the burden of shutdowns, stay at home orders and other pandemic public health measures. Making this money available is a priority of this board, and I encourage all small businesses in Perry County to take advantage of it.”

Commissioner Jim O’Brien added: “It was the vibrancy of our small business community that made it possible for Perry County to lead the state in local job growth from 2015 to 2019.  To us, it’s not only fair for us to help these hardworking people, it is also a good way to help the entire county during this pandemic.”

“Our Perry County Small Business Relief Program will help businesses cover expenses from the COVID-19 pandemic. March 23, 2020 is the first day for eligible expenses and up to $10,000 and if not otherwise covered by other programs,’ said Commissioner Ben Carpenter. “We urge every small business in Perry County that is interested in this program to download the application as soon as possible and submit your application. Our goal is to make the process and the web page easy to navigate through and we will work very quickly to get this money into the hands of small business owners”

According to Perry County Chamber of Commerce President John Ulmer, “This is a badly needed shot in the arm for our small business owners. They, along with the entire county, have been put in a difficult situation by the pandemic. The challenges they have been given have made it extremely tough for many of our small businesses to remain open.”

The Small Business Relief Program will provide Perry County small businesses of up to 30 employees in size with up to $10,000 of funds to cover expenses incurred since March 23 due to business interruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses must be able to document their expenses in a report they will need to file 40 days after the grant is accepted.

The application window will open at 8:00 AM on Wednesday, September 16. Since funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-qualified and completed basis, interested small business owners should get the application as soon as possible.
