HAPCAP Announces Rent, Mortgage, and Water Assistance for Residents Impacted by COVID-19

GLOUSTER –Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP), which serves Hocking, Athens, and Perry Counties, has announced that there are funds available to assist households impacted by COVID-19 with rent or mortgage payments and to prevent water and sewer disconnections beginning November 2, 2020.

Ohioans who are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and have fallen behind on rent or mortgage payments, water bills, or sewer payments are encouraged to contact HAPCAP to submit an application for assistance. Funds are available for a limited time and applicants are encouraged to reach out early.

“Our communities need stability during these uncertain times,” said Kelly Hatas, HAPCAP’s Executive Director. “These funds will be able to keep our families safe and healthy during the continued economic fallout from COVID-19. No one should be faced with homelessness, especially during a pandemic.”

Governor Mike DeWine announced the availability of funds last Friday during a joint press conference with members of the General Assembly. The funding is part of the CARES Act stimulus package and are available until December 30, 2020.

Each county in HAPCAP’s service area has a Community Resource Navigator who will be able to help guide them through the program’s application process. Residents needing assistance may contact HAPCAP’s main office at (740) 767-4500 to schedule an appointment. They may also visit hapcap.org/cares for more information about the program.

“The moratorium on evictions has helped mitigate the effects of this crisis,” said Hatas. “However, payments and fees are still accumulating. We encourage every one of our neighbors who needs help to reach out to us so that we can help as many families as possible before this funding expires. We applaud Ohio’s leadership in providing this relief as so many Ohioans have been struggling to pay housing and water bills during this pandemic.”

Residents outside of HAPCAP’s service area can find their local Community Action Agency by visiting https://oacaa.org/agency-directory/.
