RE: Annual HUD Point In Time Count

____________________________________________________________________________________________

The Perry Housing Coalition will once again participate in the annual Point In Time (PIT) count that is required by the US Housing and Urban Development Agency (HUD).

Tuesday, January 23, 2018 volunteers around the nation will gather to go into local neighborhoods to take a "Head Count" of people who are literally homeless; people who are living precariously and often "out of sight" of the general population. Areas, such as under bridges; on the stoop of churches; in parks, in the woods, any-where they are able to find seclusion and makeshift shelter.

The purpose of this count is to provide communities and governments a better idea of just how many people homelessness affects throughout the country and with that information, learn more about how to reduce the number of people who live without housing and develop programs and funding streams that will address the very real problem. Some believe that if we don't see homeless people sleeping in cardboard boxes, or on park benches then we are among those communities that doesn't have a homeless problem. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Although rural communities often don't often see the "common homeless", they are there none the less.

Doubling up in housing, couch surfing, or "camping" is often the lure of the HIDDEN HOMELESS, but there are still many, many people who do not have any indoor shelter and must find outdoor areas where they are able to "hide" each night.

During the PIT count members of the Perry Housing Coalition will be heading out to find those secret places and will do our best to not only identify these people/families but will also offer a backpack with items that will provide personal hygiene items, a warm blanket and other donated items as they become available.

Back Packs have been provided by Tin Cup Ministries and we seek the other items from within our local community.

If your agency or civic group would like to donate any items, or would like to be a part of the actual count, or if you would like to participate in any way or for additional information, please contact the PHC Co - Chair Kenn McCord or email Coalition Secretary, Patti Smith at perryhousingprojects@yahoo.com

Thank you for your willingness to work with us to supply basic living needs to those who are without a home.
