The Perry Soil & Water Conservation District, in Somerset, is pleased to share its plans for the 2019 Glenford Fort Hike.  The hike will take place at the Glenford Fort Preserve located at 11995 State Route 757, just 1.5 miles south of Glenford. The event will be held at the fort from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday June 22, rain or shine.

The Glenford Fort is a significant Adena and Hopwell hilltop enclosure that straddles the margins of the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian bedrock systems, that has been well known to our earliest settlers and was first chronicled by Caleb Atwater in 1820.  Atwater was Ohio’s first published historian and surveyed and investigated many of Ohio’s important Adena and Hopewell sites.  In 1820 he presented a paper to the American Antiquarian Society and while much of his theories, as well as those of his contemporaries were faulty, he seems prescient when he described the site as a “sacred enclosure which was resorted to on some great anniversary” and not a military fort.  Today’s historians and archaeologists say similar things and often use the adjective enigmatic to describe these most challenging of all the structures the ancients have left us.

The south side of the enclosure was purchased by the SWCD to serve as an education center and preserve to advance and protect its archaeological and natural resources and to make them readily available to an interested public  We partner with the Don and Elizabeth Cooperrider Family, the Heartland Earthworks Conservancy, the Arc of Appalachia, the Perry County Historical Society and Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist.  Our partners provided many key elements during the acquisition process and have also proved key in the development of the hike program and long term planning and maintenance at the site.

Interpretive hikes will begin at 11:00 and be lead by David Snider, Administrator for PSWCD and Historical Society Trustee  and Steve Glade a certified Ohio Volunteer Naturalist and Perry SWCD Board Member.  Geology, plant communities and the Adena-Hopewell culture will be part of the tour discussions.  At noon a lunch will be offered on the upper terrace.  After lunch our featured speakers will hold forth and expand upon Atwater’s 198 year old observations.

Joseph Snider, Archaeological Crew Chief of Ohio Valley Archaeology, Vice President of the Perry County Historical Society will provide remarks.  The keynote speaker will be Al Tonetti, Vice President of Heartland Earthworks Conservancy and Chairman of Government Affairs Committee of the Ohio Archaeological Council.  We are pleased that such skill and talent join us as it underscores the importance of this site.  Visitors may hike at their leisure or may choose to participate in the guided hikes and other programming.  The program concludes at 2:00 PM
