JobsOhio Update and Economic Impact Memo from JP Nauseef | October 22, 2020

JobsOhio Business Leaders and Community Stakeholders,

Ohio’s recovery continues to show positive results with the unemployment rate lowering and Ohioans returning to work. With the DeWine Administration’s leadership, Ohio’s rebound continues to show progress including:

  • Ohio has the 6th lowest overall economic exposure to the virus.
    • Moody’s Analytics, Precis U.S. State Report on Ohio (June 2020)

  • Ohio has the 11th fastest return to pre-COVID economic conditions.

  • Ohio ranks 2nd fastest return to pre-COVID economic conditions when compared with peer sates and is tied with West Virginia. Peer states are: IL, IN, MI, KY, PA, WV.

  • Consumer spending in Ohio is recovering faster than the U.S.; Ohio is at 101% of pre-Pandemic levels v. 96.8% recovery for the U.S.

While the economy moves ahead, our team has worked to strengthen Ohio’s future through new initiatives including the Ohio Site Inventory Program (OSIP) that supports and expands available sites for development across the state. Another initiative is the Inclusion Program which gives JobsOhio more reach into diverse communities and regions.

We are also taking on existing workforce challenges through our recent roll out of Ohio To Work™ in Cuyahoga County that supports job seekers with customized employment services and career coaching.

As a proud veteran, JobsOhio also recently introduced its newest sector highlighting military and federal installations with strong bi-partisan support from our elected stakeholders and business community leaders. We will be hosting regional events in the coming weeks that will provide additional details for our vision as well as the introduction of our sector’s leadership team.

Lastly, we are taking the Ohio success story on the road with an aggressive marketing strategy to point out what many of us already know: Ohio is a wonderful place to live and work. Our campaign will target coastal states (like California and New York) and other regions that have a high cost of living and economic barriers. By targeting these areas, we can attract companies and talent to Ohio.
