JobsOhio Update and Economic Impact Memo from JP Nauseef | June 19, 2020

JobsOhio business and community stakeholders,

One of JobsOhio’s key strategic priorities that I’ve discussed over the past several weeks is making Ohio the best state for veterans, active military members and their families. This week, Governor Mike DeWine signed House Bills 16 and 287 into law, which will bring Ohio one step closer to achieving this goal.

House Bill 16 will help reduce the cost of education for military families reassigned to an Ohio base. Active duty service members and their eligible family members can now qualify for in-state tuition at Ohio’s public colleges as long as the student is living in the state on the first day of a term of enrollment. House Bill 287 will expand Medicaid waiver coverage for military family members with special needs. The bill also ensures that supplemental support is provided for special needs dependents during times of transition, including base reassignment.

We are grateful for the leadership of Governor DeWine, Rep. Rick Perales and other legislators in getting these bills passed. Both bills increase Ohio’s appeal for military investment and missions. When military leaders evaluate where to place operations, these factors play a large role in their decisions.

As we continue to improve Ohio’s competitiveness, the dialogue between economic development and legislative partners is critical. This week, I met with Ohio Senate leadership to align on goals and discuss how we can help each other. Through the passing of laws that support economic development initiatives, we can ensure that Ohio is appealing to both entities and people.
